I think this is great because as long as the women are drug free and non- violent these babies are were they belong and I am sure they both are loving each other. Because when the women are released they will be the ones taking care of babies at least they are in an environment of support right now to get a new start for both the mother and the child a good beginning. And the women I am sure also support and help each other with learning and parenting. I live in a neighborhood that is low income and there is alot of stress of parenting especially when you are young and making mistakes. And for most of these parents that is the true crime doing something stupid drugs or petty crimes that they and their babies are paying a high price. I really hope they are learning while they are there. And realy wish this was possible at other prisons.

Yes it is wrong to commit crime, but in these cases I believe the worse crime is the treatment of these inmates and their entirely innocent children. By taking the children away from their mother's at just a few hours old they deprive them of the best thing their mothers could ever do for them. They deprive the children of their mothers milk. No not all mother's choose to breastfeed but depriving them of the right to decide what to do with their bodies or depriving their children of the nutritional, immunological and developmental benefits of breast milk is a crime.

I took the time to sit and read all the comments that were posted. I am wondering what has happened to our society. No matter what we done or are doing, back in the day, we would all look out for each other and their children. It just disturbs me that when a HUMAN, needs to have another chance, how many people there are to hold them back. Just like another kick in the teeth. I know they put them selves there, but we have all made mistakes, some of us just have never benn in trouble for what we have done. To all the women who are having babies in prison I COMMEND YOU....It's hard enough to bring a child in to the world today, but to do it in prison, that takes guts...Most of the people on here who have negativity in their words, would just give up

I think they need to be chained and should not be allowed to keep their child in prison

I'm sorry but if you commit the crime you have to pay the price. These girls should have thought that before stealing, selling drugs, ect. What do these girls expect that just cause they're pregnant they get a free pass jail so leave or expect to get the royal treatment while in jail? They have to start learning from their mistakes and then they can teach their children not to do the same mistakes they did. Its time for girls to start getting smart, instead of blaming others for their failures and mistakes.

I was once in jail for 28 days. The whole thing is inhumae but to see the pregnant women chained was extremly hurtful for me. I had my kids before I got into trouble and went to jail for failure to appear in court but no matter what the crime people are still human and should be treated as such. The rights that we have as AMERICANS do not say unless we are in jail. People make mistakes and need to learn from them but treating them like animals will not teach it only makes them more harsh to deal with if ever released. Being a mother who had all my kids naturally I couldnt imagine going through that pain shackeled.Although I dont like the idea of babies spending time with mothers in jail because now not only is the mom doing time but so is the innocent child.

i think this is a wondrful thing yo do for prison mothers. at least they have good conditions to be with their children. all prison should look into this alternative to support expectant mothers in jail. after all IT'S ABOUT THE BABIES!!!

I think it is a great article. At many times a child can make you break the old habits that you had because now you have to deal with a baby/child... There are bigger choices to be made. "Will it be drugs or Diapers?" "Fromula or Crack" Some moms might choose the Drugs part of it but some will choose what the baby needs. Charing for the baby will become her drug choice. If a woman has her child in prison, she should be able to still raise it even if she is a single mom. Just because Mom is in prison doesn't mean she is a bad mother. I just means she made some bad choices in life and this is where the road led her. Let the women choose if they want their child to go to foster care System or if they want to keep it.

There is always a way to make things right. i believe they should never be strapped while giving birth and i also believe no one should complain about their upbringing in determining their way of life. they should have made the best of everything they ever had to make the best out of life. u shouldn't complain but try and focus on the future and make the best out of it. GOOD LUCK

My heart goes out to these women and I salute them for their Pro-Life position. Everyone should have the right to have children if they want to. However this prison injustice pales in comparison to the evil of abortion-on-demand.

I have read 13 comments and the ones who are negative and against women having their babies in prison, can't spell properly or puncuate, yet are so perfect. What does that say for your "intelligent" opinion. Maybe those who have such negative things to say need to look in the mirror. Those who lash out at others tend to have many of their own issues...in this case...they are lacking education.

Anna, As the article said, they are mostly women who have been abused one way or the other and have made a mistake in their life. They are not hard core criminals. Many have drug problems (which is something that can be corrected using the right methods). Subjecting them to more abuse and taking away their least bit of self respect will only make their problems in the society bigger, and make them more serious criminals down the line. The example of the center where mothers and babies can live and be educated proves this with the lower rate of re-admitance amongst these moms. We should focus on fixing the problems of our society, not making them more serious, and this practice, is not helping.
